Leadership begins with a question most people never ask themselves honestly: Would I follow me? Not am I a good person? Not do I work hard? Would I follow me — today, in this season, with the habits I currently have, the energy I currently bring, the example I currently set?
The Mirror Test is the most important leadership assessment in the world. It costs nothing. It requires no consultant, no 360-degree review, no personality assessment. It requires only the courage to look at yourself clearly and answer honestly.
The gap between who you are and who you need to be is not a source of shame. It is a roadmap. Every leader who has ever built something great started with a gap. The question is not whether the gap exists — it always does. The question is whether you are willing to see it and close it.
There are four dimensions of the Mirror Test. Character — are you the kind of person you would want leading you? Do you keep your word? Do you take responsibility or make excuses? Do you do the hard thing when it is easier not to? Competence — are you getting better? Are you investing in your skills, your knowledge, your craft? Are you the kind of leader who is always growing, or have you stopped? Consistency — are you the same person on Monday morning as you are on Friday afternoon? Do you show up the same way regardless of how you feel? Courage — are you willing to have the hard conversations, make the difficult decisions, and hold the standard even when it is uncomfortable?
The leader who passes the Mirror Test does not need to demand respect. They earn it automatically. Because people can feel the difference between someone who leads from a position and someone who leads from a standard.
The Mirror Test question: Would I follow me today? Answer it honestly. The gap is your roadmap.
Leadership is built in four dimensions: Character, Competence, Consistency, and Courage.
You cannot lead others to a standard you are not willing to hold yourself to first.
